Today marked a monumental step in the career of SSB group member Sergio Gutiérrez, who successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled: "Improving the potential of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a host for specialty chemical production", as the first PhD graduate of the SSB group.

Sergio gave an overview of his research, carried out over the last four years at KAUST, to committee members Prof. Peiying Hong, Prof. Fabian Schmidt, and external examiner Prof. Saul Purton from University College London.

After KAUST, Sergio is joining the lab of Prof. Patrick Cai at The University of Manchester as a postdoctoral fellow.
