Panel Talk at Sci-Café

19 February, 2020

The panelists included:

  1. Prof. Mani Sarathy from the Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center at KAUST. Dr. Sarathy spoke about developing combustion engines with efficiencies up to 60% and weaning the aviation industry towards low-carbon fuels.
  2. Dr. Thomas Finkbeiner from Clean Combustion Research Center at KAUST. Dr. Finkbeiner spoke about reinjecting carbon dioxide back into the ground in order to increase efficiency of ground operations, and promoted reducing carbon emissions by relying on geothermal energy with carbon dioxide mediation for district cooling.
  3. Prof. Kyle Lauersen spoke about the potential to use carbon dioxide capture in order to promote the growth of biotechnology through using it as a resource for generating algal biomass.

The panel was chaired by Dr. Naadiya Carrim. You can find here on twitter @NaadiyaCarrim where she posts about all past and future Sci-Café events.

Combined, the speakers promoted a future of the world where we produce less carbon dioxide, and then use the generated carbon dioxide to promote more sustainable energy- and bio-production operations.

The panelists each spoke about research in their groups, fields, and overcoming their fields' challenges. Questions from the audience raised the debate of individual vs. collective policy-based actions to bring forward a Circular Carbon Economy to our world.
