About this system

The KSA Algae Living Library is the culture collection held by the Sustainable & Synthetic Biotechnology group at KAUST. This system is the working catalog for that collection: 171 strains isolated from Saudi Arabian waters and habitats, searchable, mapped, and available to request.

Held for every strain: species name, water type, identification level, marker gene, cultivation medium, collection site, and coordinates.
Derived facets used for browsing and filtering: habitat groupings, extreme-origin badges, and KSA regions. These are catalog conventions for navigation rather than formal SSB taxonomy.

Requesting strains. Use the checkbox on any card to select several strains, then send one request covering the whole set. Availability shown on each card reflects the current state of the collection.

Growth. Where SSB has characterized a strain, the growth panel plots the measured absorbance series from the laboratory workbooks. Light-regime and seasonal-condition experiments are plotted separately and are never combined on one chart. Separately, the laboratory's own figures are shown and captioned by what they measure, so a dry weight figure says so. Dry weight is a different measurement from absorbance and is not in the charts. Nothing in this catalog is simulated or illustrative.

Curator notes are written by the SSB curators and published with the catalog. They appear on a strain record where the curators have added them.

Nothing here is invented. Every field on a strain record comes from the SSB source data. Where a value was never recorded, the row is simply absent rather than filled with an estimate or a status. Micrographs, culture photographs, growth figures, and growth series appear only where SSB has supplied them.

Where data is still being connected. Ten deposits have no recorded coordinates yet and appear without a map pin. A further eight carry coordinates but are awaiting a confirmed region, and read as location pending until SSB has reviewed them. Eighteen strains have no micrograph or growth data on file.
